IPMS St. John's 2015 Model Show and Competition

IPMS St. John's would like to thank everyone who attended and competed in the 2015 Model Show and Competition on Sunday Oct 25, to make it one of the most successful shows in recent years.

The quality of work was great and it shows the amount effort put into the kits. It is also great to see the interest in the hobby in our area. It was commented on more than once that it was great to see so many younger folks taking up the hobby, we had more Juniors in attendance and competing than ever before. It was also very encouraging to see the amount of entries in the contest triple overall from last year!

Thanks go out to Club members who hosted the public and acted as ambassadors of the club. There were many stories, pieces of advice, and hints and tips shared. Great job everyone!

I would like to thank our local hobby shop - Signal Hobbies - for their support of the show and helping in spread the word. We are grateful to them for supplying Best in Show prize. Thanks Fred and Aune. It was great to see you at the show.

Thanks to Club members and the many Friends of the Club for sharing on their social media to spread the word wider than ever before.

It was a great show, we are proud to help the modeling community come together for a day of sharing all of the projects and related stories. We had people come from as far away as Grand Falls (4.5 hrs drive) and Carbonear (1.5 Hrs) just to be at the show. So glad you could share your work with all of us.

Our Club always welcomes new members no matter what skill level, what age or model interest. If you would like more information about the Club, please email us at ipms.sj@gmail.com

Until next year - Keep Building!!!!

See Photo Album at the following link, let me know if you cant see it.

Steve F – Battle of Britain assortment
Steve started numbering his kits on the underside of the rear stabilizer years after he started. Even still he is up past 725 to date, and usually build more than 12 a year.
This is a selection of his true BoB kits from both sides of the Channel. Can you recognize anything that is not a Spit or Hurricane? Leave a message in the comments.

Chris – New Meng-Model Land Cruiser with aftermarket BMP turret
Chris has been focusing on equipment examples from the Syrian conflict lately, they are popular subjects in the model industry worldwide these day. Another fabulous job especially on the weathering! I wouldn’t be surprised to see this in one of the more popular model magazines soon.

Joe - Staghound in progress
I am slowly making progress with my Staghound, but took some time to figure out how to get the baskets the Manitoba Dragoons used for stowage on the side of the armored car, instead of the fuel tank. I had the brass rod, but didn’t know what to do about the mesh. I finally landed on Aber S08 diagonal mesh from eBay. I think it looks just fine. The CA glue was not working that well, I could not handle the frame robustly to fit the mesh, so it is also my first attempt at soldering photo etch. Not as easy as it looks!
What you don’t see on the tables is a picture of my 303 Sdn Hurricane from Battle of Britain. I forgot to take a picture of it that night, but included a light box shot from home. Piloted by Canadian Johnny Kent, he was Flt Lt with the Polish 303 Sdn in Sept 1940.

Bert – Arifx order
It was good to see Bert after an absence. He has an activity that conflicts with our meeting time, but in the spirit of Battle of Britain, Bert brought in his recently received order of BoB examples from Airfix. The new owners of Airfix have certainly invigorated the modeling tastes of folks who loved these kits in the past. With all new tooling, based on laser capture of dimensions, plus a subtle touch to detail, are producing some very fine kits. A side note, I have the new A5125 Spitfire Vb, and peeked in the box, WOW – I am going to hit that soon..

Steve F- Photo collection
Steve share with us photos of Military in St. John’s from the first part of the century. Steve’s Grandfather was an officer with the (Royal) Newfoundland Regiment in the Great War, and a public figure during the second. Amazing to see some of the name from our history books there.
Steve also showed an in progress shot of a Spitfire Mk I from the fictitious Royal Newfoundland Air Force at the time of the Battle of Britain. 

Bruce
I also had an email from Bruce out in Central Nfld, a close follower of the club for years. He shared his diorama of a Battle of Britain air combat scene. Stunning!

Swap Night selection
It was a good swap night, lots of selection and lots of new owners produced. Some of this stuff is still left if members who couldn’t make it are interested. Otherwise you will probably see this stuff and more at the Swap Table at the Show on Oct 25, at the Remax Center (St. John’s Curling Club).

That’s it for this month folks, see you next month!
